Problem we are aiming to solve:
As a middle school math teacher for several years, Keiki Cards Hawaiʻi Founder, Charlie Clausner, saw that the current educational resources landscape has a one-size fits all approach to foundational math skills. Based on game-based learning Clausner uses in his own classroom, Keiki Cards was built to address this gap, and make learning math more culturally relevant, joyous, and community-based. We currently offer two card decks, based on Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.
Moreover, 38% of first- through third-grade students are not fluent with basic addition (Stickney et al. 2012)
Place-based curriculum is defined as when the content in school’s curriculum matches the student’s physical location. Place-based curriculum contextualizes learning in a way that taps into the students’ prior knowledge (Yamauchi et al.). Further research shows students who learn through a curriculum that connects to their place and identity show greater engagement and achievement.
